Top 11 Natural Antibiotics for Everyone (and how to use them)

When my son gets sick, I can visit his pediatrician.  After a lab test confirms a bacterial infection, he gets a prescription for antibiotics.  Problem solved.
But what if I weren’t able to call the doctor?
What if the pharmacies weren’t open and I couldn’t buy medicine?
Or what if there was an outbreak of antibacterial-resistant bacteria?
These are just some of the reasons why preppers should stockpile natural antibiotics.

How to Use Natural Antibiotics

There are numerous studies which show that natural antibiotics are just as good as pharmaceuticals.  In some cases, studies show that the natural antibiotics are even more effective than the pharmaceutical.
Keep in mind that studies usually don’t use the raw plant.  The scientists use strong extracts from the plants when doing their experiments.  The results the scientists get may not reflect the results you’d get by eating the plant.
For example, garlic is one of the most well-known natural antibiotics.  But it is the compound allicin in garlic which kills bacteria.
You’d have to eat a lot of garlic to get enough allicin to treat a bacterial infection.
Likewise, most teas aren’t potent enough to fight an infection.
You could drink gallons of tea and still not make a dent in the bacterial population (though drinking fluids is important when sick!).

To make sure natural antibiotics
are potent enough, you will need to:

·         Buy them in tincture form
·         Make your own tinctures
·         Extract the essential oils
·         Boil down to create a resin

For detailed instructions on how to make tinctures, essential oils, and resins, see this post.

Fish Antibiotics Option

If your main interest in natural antibiotics is for disaster prepping, you should know that fish antibiotics are also an option.
Fish antibiotics are exactly the same as antibiotics prescribed for humans.  The difference is that you don’t need a prescription.

Top 11 Natural Antibiotics for Preppers

1. Garlic
Image result for Garlic
Garlic contains a compound called allium which kills both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.  Studies have found it effective against various bacterial and fungal infections.
The allium in garlic is particularly effective against intestinal infections, such as those that cause diarrhea. Garlic is even effective against bacteria which have become resistant to antibiotics.
How to Use: Tinctures or drink the juice of raw garlic
Best For: Intestinal infections, but also effective against many types of bacterial and fungal infections.

2. Clove

Image result for Clove
Clove is not only a potent natural antibacterial, but it also reduces inflammation and pain.
Since it doesn’t have any negative effects associated with it, you can even take clove oil daily as a way to prevent infections.
This could be very smart to do in times of hygiene crises, such as after a flood disaster.

How to Use: Essential oil or tincture
Best For: Food poisoning, oral infections (including thrush), external use on skin infections

3. Cinnamon
Image result for Cinnamon
Did you know that thieves who would steal jewelry from dead bodies used to take a concoction made of cinnamon? The natural remedy would keep them from getting sick.
Numerous studies support cinnamon’s natural antibacterial properties. It has been shown effective in treating staph, E. coli, streptococcus, and antibiotic strains of bacteria.
Just be warned that it may cause skin irritation, so test a small amount before putting cinnamon oil on the skin.

How to Use: Essential oil or capsules
Best For: Strep throat, staph infections, diarrhea

4. Hot Peppers

Image result for Hot Peppers
Hot peppers, such as habanero, contain a compound called capsicum. It is one of the most potent natural antibiotics available.
While it may seem counterintuitive to eat spicy foods when you have an upset stomach, capsicum is very effective against food poisoning and GI infections.  Yes, your bowels will move (which will help remove the pathogens from your GI tract).
Capsicum also increases body temperature, which in turn helps your body fight of viral and bacterial infections.
You can use hot pepper extracts on your skin (such as by making a salve).  However, some people have a bad reaction to it. So always test the salve on a small portion of your skin before applying to a skin infection.

How to Use: Juice of the pepper, essential oil
Best For: Fungal infections, food poisoning, staph infections, ear infections, cholera, h. pylori, listeria, viral infections, skin infections

5. Oregano
Image result for Oregano
Oregano is another one of those potent natural antibiotics that only works in high concentrations.
You’d have to eat a massive amount of oregano to fight an infection! Thus, you must make a tincture or oil extraction of oregano.
I would recommend that you grow lot of oregano as part of a medicinal garden.  Then you can make your own tincture or oil from your harvest. Otherwise, just buy oil of oregano online.

How to Use: Oil or tincture; drinking oregano tea will only have mild benefits; may burn if applied externally
Best For: Most types of poisoning (particularly E. coli), athlete’s foot, ringworm, tooth infections, insect bites, muscle pain

6. Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is made from microscopic particles of silver. While this isn’t something you can make yourself, it is a good natural antibiotic to stockpile.
Silver is a potent antibiotic.  It has also been shown to increase the antimicrobial effects of pharmaceutical antibiotics when taken with them.
While you can take colloidal silver orally, it is best to only use externally – such as for treating wounds.  If you take too much of it, the silver can build up inside body tissues.

How to Use: Externally
Best For: Treating burns and wounds

7. Echinacea

Image result for Echinacea
Echinacea has numerous health benefits, including boosting immunity, reducing inflammation, and fighting against pathogens.
It is most commonly used for treating respiratory infections. However, you can use Echinacea for a wide variety of ailments.
Just be warned that the Echinacea tea you find in supermarkets isn’t going to be potent enough to treat a serious infection.  You’ll want to use a tincture.
The tincture can be squirted directly on the throat (for throat infections), consumed (for other internal infections), or  applied directly to skin (for wounds or yeast infections).

How to Use: Tincture, tea
Best For: Respiratory infections, throat infections, viral infections (including the flu), urinary tract infections, yeast infections

8. Apple Cider Vinegar
Related image
I love this natural antibiotic because you can find it in your pantry.  Vinegars don’t spoil, so you can stockpile them easily too.  Plus, it isn’t that difficult to make your own vinegar.
ACV has many health benefits, including antimicrobial and antiviral.
While taking it internally might help boost your immune system, it is most effective when it can be applied directly to the infection.
That means using ACV as a gargle for sore throats and tooth infections.

How to Use: Dilluted as a gargle
Best For: Throat infections, tooth infections

9. Probiotics

Probiotics are the “good” bacteria which are found in your body.
We are becoming increasingly aware of how important they are for everyday health.  They can also be used to fight bacterial infections.
The way that probiotics help infections is by literally killing off the “bad” bacteria causing the infection.  They’ll help keep your flora balanced too.
Remember that even natural antibiotics can kill good bacteria, so it’s a good idea to take probiotics during treatment.

It’s a bit hard to stockpile probiotics because they go bad quickly.  However, you can make your own probiotics, such as with lacto fermentation.

How to Use: Consume with food; take with other natural antibiotics
Best For: GI infections

10. Cranberries
Image result for Cranberries
Most women already know that (unsweetened) cranberry juice is a powerful natural cure for urinary tract infections.
The powerful antioxidants in cranberries have also been shown to have an antibacterial effect on other types of infections.
Know that many types of bacteria feed on sugar.  So it is always best to drink unsweetened cranberry juice.
Heating the juice (which occurs in virtually all store-bought juice) will also destroy antioxidants.
If possible, it is best to make your own cranberry juice by blending the berries with some water in a blender and then straining it.

How to Use: Drink unsweetened juice or take capsules
Best For: UTIs, food poisoning

11. Nettles
Image result for Nettles

I love nettles because a) they are edible, b) they are VERY nutritious and c) they grow like weeds.
Nettles are also one of the best natural antibiotics that people don’t know about.
The antibacterial properties of nettles come from their potent antioxidants.  These antioxidants not only will kill bacteria, but will boost your immune system so you can fight off the infection.
Unfortunately, nettles haven’t been as extensively studied as the other natural antibiotics here so we don’t know their full potential.
How to Use: Steam and eat, made into a tincture, essential oils
Best For: Typhoid fever, food poisoning

Have you used natural antibiotics?

What ones would you add to the list?

Hajjonomics: The business of getting India's pilgrims to Mecca

Mumbai, India - As the last few flights carrying pilgrims bound for Mecca depart, Afzal Patel reflects on one of the busiest times of the year for his growing travel empire.
"This year we sent 150 people on Hajj," said Patel.
A former encyclopaedia salesman, Patel is the managing director of Mumbai-based Atlas Tours and Travels, one of the most well-known tour operators in India for religious tourism.
"While on average I have 400 to 500 customers in Saudi Arabia at any given time, servicing the hajjis [pilgrims] is particularly important for us and also a great honour," he said.
The Hajj pilgrimage occurs annually from the 8 to 12 of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month in the Islamic calendar, and is required of all Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the trip. It is also a linchpin of Patel's business.

Combined with Umrah - a non-mandatory pilgrimage that can be made at any time - religious tourism represents 20 percent of his annual revenue.

Scaling the business

There is one major hurdle that travel agents face to scaling the market for Hajj tourists - quotas. Saudi Arabia places a cap on the number of pilgrims that countries are allowed to send to the Hajj each year. And the Indian government only allows domestic travel agents to sell a maximum of 150 packages per season.
This year, Saudi Arabia increased India's total allocation of Hajj places by 30,000 to a total 200,000, easing access to Islam's holiest site for the 140 million-strong Muslim community in India.
"Part of India's substantial Hajj quota increase is a catching-up exercise after the Saudi government restricted numbers between 2013 and 2016 while they expanded their infrastructure," Sean McLoughlin, Professor of the Anthropology of Islam at the University of Leeds, told Al Jazeera.
The Indian government runs a lottery to send pilgrims on the Hajj, but it is oversubscribed. This year, 267,000 applicants competed for just 140,000 places, according to the Haj Committee of India.
Private tour operators are allocated 30 percent of India's allotted quota of pilgrims - and they are trying to make the most of that market.
Packages start at upwards of $4,220 per pilgrim and often offer perks the government lottery doesn't, such as more conveniently located hotels, more comfortable transport options and some flexibility with dates.
Patel says he concentrates on the luxury end "to spread the net" and to service a niche market of customers who can afford five-star luxury.
Tour operators have also found ways to leverage the Hajj pilgrimage to sell "add-on" holidays such as a week in nearby countries like Iraq or Turkey.
And religious tourism doesn't necessarily start with making the Hajj. Umrah is a higher-volume business that runs year-round.
Often affordable enough for middle-class Indians to engage in every year, Umrah tours can be used as a stepping stone for travel agents to win Hajj business when customers are ready to make the pilgrimage.

"For the cost of one Hajj ticket, a whole family can go on Umrah," Irfan Motiwala, general secretary of the All India Haj Umrah Tour Organisers Association, told Al Jazeera. "Families travel a few times this way, then ideally return to the same agent for Hajj, which is a more expensive purchase, so it's an important market."

'The proper way'

Despite more pilgrims travelling with private tour operators, some still prefer to wait their turn in the government-run ballot. News reports of fraudsters duping vulnerable individuals - promising low rates and disappearing with a lifetime of savings - are not uncommon, and have made some pilgrims wary.
"We have never heard of anyone having any problems with the Haj Committee, so we only wanted to travel with them," said Zameer Razvi, 32, who was escorting eight elderly family members from their home - 375km away in Aurangabad - to Mumbai where they would catch their flight.
"It's not about the money, really, [as] most of the Hajj pilgrims prefer the Haj Committee rather than private tour operators even if they can afford more expense, since its less risky," he told Al Jazeera. "The Haj Committee is trustworthy, and this is the proper way to do it. We're not so interested in luxury options in Mecca."
The Haj Committee maintains a list of approved tour operators on its website and, this year, they number 725. But high illiteracy rates make it difficult to disseminate that information widely, an official at the Haj Committee of India told Al Jazeera.
"It's tough hearing of people who have worked on the streets as chai wallahs [tea sellers] all their life and then lose all their savings," he said. "But this issue is not related to Hajj alone, and sadly happens all year round."
There are other benefits to holding out for a government place, such as staying at one of the iconic Haj Houses dotted around the country on the day before travelling. Here, each pilgrim receives vaccinations, attends an imam-led teaching session on the rituals conducted at Mecca, and gets a free SIM card from a Saudi telecom company.
Providing these services to the 140,000 pilgrims under the Haj Committee's care is a "significant exercise", with planning for Hajj 2020 starting "just 15 days after the last flight to Mecca lands", the official said.
The cost of providing Hajj services has gone down since last year when the government stopped subsidising airfare for pilgrims.
Though the cost of travel for some pilgrims in eastern states such as West Bengal and Assam have gone up, India is still expected to send the second-largest number of pilgrims on Hajj after Indonesia.
Sitting in one of the dormitories in Mumbai's Haj House, hours before making her long-awaited trip to Mecca, Razvi's mother, Kauser Parveen, was overcome with emotion. "We feel so grateful to be making this trip, it's a dream come true for every Muslim," said Parveen, a retired teacher. "Really, I am too happy, and I can not put it into words."

Hundreds rally in Delhi to protest against India's Kashmir move

Critics denounce the move as illegal, fear it will allow the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to flout Indian constitution.

New Delhi, India - Hundreds of people have rallied in the Indian capital to protest against the scrapping of a constitutional provision that granted special status to Indian-administered Kashmir.
In the lead-up to its controversial move on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government sent thousands of additional troops to the disputed region, imposing a curfew on parts of it, arrested political leaders and shut down telecommunication lines.
Calling it the "death of Indian democracy", the protesters in New Delhi on Wednesday demanded the recently re-elected government of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reconsider its decision.
"The way they [BJP] brought the legislation and the way they got the abrogation of Article 370, it's an assault on the Indian democracy; it's an assault on our constitution; it's an assault on the federal principles of our democratic polity," said Doraisamy Raja, general secretary of the Communist Party of India.
Raja said similar protests were being held in other parts of the country and organisers planned to continue mobilising people.
On Monday morning, Amit Shah, India's minister of home affairs and a close ally of Modi, announced in the BJP-led parliament the decision to abolish Article 370 of the constitution, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.
The constitutional provision was the basis of the Muslim-majority state's accession to the Indian union in 1947 when erstwhile princely states had the choice to join either newly-independent India or Pakistan.
The article, which came into effect in 1949, allowed the state to have "limited autonomy" in certain areas and had prevented non-residents from buying any property in the disputed region.
Article 35A was introduced in 1954 to continue the old provisions of the territory regulations under Article 370. It empowered the state's legislature to define "permanent residents" and provide special rights and privileges to them.
"The Kashmiri people in 1947 joined India because they thought their Kashmiri identity was important and they felt that their Kashmiri autonomy as Kashmiris will be safer with secular India rather than Pakistan and Article 370 was that promise to them," said Kavita Krishnan, a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation.
In announcing the move on Monday, Shah argued that it was meant to help in the territory's integration into India and its governance structures.
"Because of Article 370, democracy never took root in J&K [Jammu and Kashmir], corruption flourished, widespread poverty took root and no socio-economic infrastructure could come up."
But the move, which risks escalating already-heightened tensions with neighbouring Pakistan, is expected to face legal challenges.
"The decision was taken in absence of an elected legislative assembly in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, so we will fight this decision both legally and politically," said Shehla Rashid, a former student activist and member of the newly floated Jammu and Kashmir People's Movement political party, condemned the move:
Krishnan called it an attack on India's federal constitution.
"If they have got rid of that page [Article 370] of India's constitution, every other page is in danger as well," she said.
'Loss of our identity'
Holding placards, the protesters raised anti-Modi and anti-Shah placards as they marched from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar.
A demonstrator from New Delhi, who wished not to be named, said: "I have joined the protest because I feel ashamed that how can our government not consult the people of a state about whom it's made such a big decision. It's a clear violation of democratic process and is an insult to Indian democracy."
She added: "Government says it will open investment but it will lead to more protest as the Kashmiris were completely left out from the decision making."
Several Kashmiri students said they had not been able to speak to their families for a third straight day due to the communication blackout.
"India claims to be the world's biggest democracy but the world has today seen what kind of democracy it is," said Mehvish, a Kashmiri student protesting in New Delhi.
"We have not been able to speak to our families for days now and this government doesn't care about our pain, the trauma we go through. What they care about is the Kashmiri land and nothing else," she said.
"Revoking Article 370 means loss of our identity as Kashmiris."

Kyrgyz officer killed as ex-president Atambayev evades arrest

Dispute between President Jeenbekov and his former mentor threatens to plunge the country into political crisis.

A Kyrgyz officer was killed Wednesday when special forces stormed the compound of former president Almazbek Atambayev, as mounting tensions with his successor Sooronbai Jeenbekov threaten to spark a political crisis in the fragile Central Asian state.
The officer died from a gunshot wound after Atambayev's supporters tried to stop his arrest, the Kyrgyz health ministry said.
"A special forces officer was delivered (to hospital) in an extremely serious condition with a gunshot wound. Despite resuscitation attempts, he died," it said in a statement.
Atambayev, who ruled Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017 before handing over to Jeenbekov, has barricaded himself in his residence. He also increased security at his estate in the village of Koi-Tash outside the capital Bishkek, as tensions between him and Jeenbekov rise.
Clashes broke out at Koi-Tash in the evening after Kyrgyzstan's national security committee (GKNB) said its special forces were undertaking a "special operation to detain former president Almazbek Atambayev".
The GKNB claimed that special forces were armed "only with rubber bullets" while Atambayev's supporters had shot back with firearms.
The health ministry said that 36 people, including 15 members of the security services, had been admitted to hospital with injuries.
Atambayev saw his immunity lifted in June as the authorities seek to prosecute him on corruption charges.
He has ignored three police summons for questioning in a case connected to the surprise release from jail of a well-known underworld boss during his presidency.
Atambayev has still not been detained, several key aides have confirmed.
Mirbek Aitikeyev, an eyewitness at Koi-Tash who broadcast footage from the compound live on Facebook, told AFP news agency that some of the former president's loyalists had seized weapons from the special forces.
Blackout
Local and foreign media struggled to reach staff working at Koi-Tash as authorities appeared to block internet and mobile connections in the village, which is a short drive from Bishkek.
Dmitriy Lozhnikov, a member of the political council in Atambayev's Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan, also told Russia's state-owned news channel, Russia-24, that electricity to the village had been cut.
Following the lifting of his immunity by parliament, which Atambayev says was unconstitutional, the former president vowed to "stand to the end" against the charges, calling Jeenbekov's administration a "mafia clan."
The two men were once friends and Atambayev backed Jeenbekov's candidacy in the 2017 elections. But they fell out just months after Jeenbekov's inauguration as Atambayev publicly criticised his successor.
Atambayev became Kyrgyzstan's first elected president to hand over power peacefully in 2017, following revolutions in 2005 and 2010.
Jeenbekov has accused Atambayev of seeking to control politics from the comfort of retirement.
The conflict between the two men, both of whom have been accused of using law enforcement agencies to get rid of political opponents, could turn into a full-blown political crisis.
Last month, Atambayev travelled to Russia and met Vladimir Putin, who pledged his support to Kyrgyzstan but advised "everyone to unite around the current president and help him develop the country."
The conflict in Kyrgyzstan is likely to be watched with apprehension both in Russia and China, whose political and economic interests in the country deepened during Atambayev's rule.

Ocean Viking migrant rescue ship 'not allowed' to refuel in Malta

Maltese authorities have refused the Ocean Viking rescue ship to refuel in their harbours while on its search and rescue mission off the coast of Libya, according to the rescue organisation operating the ship, SOS Mediterranee.
According to SOS Mediterranee, which operates the ship to rescue migrants and refugees with the Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, the Ocean Viking was originally allowed to refuel on open waters.
"Ocean Viking was scheduled to refuel offshore Malta as is standard practice for ships in the area needing fuel," Laura Garel from SOS Mediterranee told Al Jazeera.
"This would have been convenient for SOS Mediterranee and the ship since we would be passing through the area in order to reach the central Mediterranean where we conduct our search and rescue activities."
Maltese maritime authorities informed the Ocean Viking via VHF radio that the ship had "no authorization to enter Maltese territorial waters", added Garel.
"We did not receive an official explanation about why we were not allowed to refuel."
The Ocean Viking, sailing under the Norwegian flag and currently located about 150km from the Maltese coast, started its mission from the French port of Marseille on Monday.
According to Garel, the ship has fuel and food left for several days and it will now head to the central Mediterranean to conduct search and rescue activities.
The organisation is looking for a solution for when fuel and food eventually run out, but did not have one as of yet.
The Ocean Viking has a crew of nine, plus a search-and-rescue team and medical and other staff. The ship can house between 200 and 300 refugees and migrants.
It set sail seven months after the organisations were forced to abandon the mission using their ship Aquarius.
After nearly three years of operations, in which it rescued about 30,000 people, the Aquarius was forced to cease operations in December 2018 because of what the groups said was obstruction by some European countries.
The charities said at the start of the new mission that "426 men, women and children have died" since the beginning of the year in the central Mediterraneanwhile attempting to "escape the escalating conflict in Libya and the deplorable conditions of Libyan detention centres".
"As people are still fleeing Libya on one of the most perilous sea crossings in the world, and with almost no available rescue assets present in the central Mediterranean, it has been an imperative for both SOS Mediterranee and MSF to return."

Our Heroes need their identity back

Lt. Colonel Haroon ur Rashid Qureshi is a war veteran of 1971 war. He had a chance to visit Dacca twice, initially in college uniform and later in Army Uniform. He has penned down his memories in his book "Dacca Diary" in a very interesting way. Here he has written his memories of a friend and comrade, Captain Muhammad Akbar Khan Niazi.

I joined my unit 8 Baluch (Abbasiya) in 1968, at Peshawar. Verily it was a milestone in my life. Being a boy of 19 years, I was not only the youngest but the junior most officer of the unit. My seniors used to call me "Munna". It always infuriated me as I considered myself a man, in full bloom of his life and authority. So, I used to react to these words, not publicly but deep inside. There I met my senior, Niazi. Lt Mohammad Akbar Khan Niazi (M. A. K. Niazi for short) was his full name. Tall, powerfully built, smart and intelligent, he was a prime example of a warrior. Soon we developed a bond of brotherhood between us. Although I was blessed to enjoy the affection of everyone in the unit, but Niazi was special; he was my best friend.

In 1969 we moved to Quetta, where we were alloted adjacent BOQs in a mess at Robert's Market. I had a 500 CC Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle, which no doubt was a lovely machine to ride, but created a lot of noise when started. So every morning, I got up early in the morning and used to start my motorcycle and revved it to warm up the engine. It used to create two types of noises. First the roar of my motorcycle and second the scolding from Niazi.

The unit used to camp at FFR-4 for exercises, where we would spend a couple of months under canvas. We would carry out tactical training, field firing and practice field-craft during this time. Evenings were very enjoyable with games, songs, skits and fun. Niazi was a very good Kabaddi player and an agile wrestler. He would normally rule the ring. Since he had gotten commission from ranks, he knew the problems the lower ranks faced, and had a very helpful and sympathetic attitude towards them, and was immensely popular. I distinctly remember Niazi singing " Kukra kandhan thivi saweray dittiai bang" and "Ucha hawai bangla, wichay maiman tehel thian"
ککڑا کندھاں تھیویں سویرے دتی اے بانگ and اچا ہوائی بنگلہ وچ میماں ٹہلدیاں. in a lusty voice around bonfires late at night, mesmerising everyone. He had a very peaceful, serene and calm nature and nothing could make him panic.

Time flew and my unit was posted to East Pakistan. Me and Niazi were Captains at that time. It was a time of chaos and turmoil; it was 1971. Although I had been here during my student days, but this East Pakistan was totally different. My unit was busy with fighting rebels all the time. Alongwith the unit, Niazi was also busy in action.

On reaching Dacca, we as company commanders were tasked to secure different areas. The point where me and Niazi parted our ways was Junction Joydebpur-Ghazipur. I was ordered to capture 2 EBR at Joydebpur while Niazi was tasked to capture Ammunition Factory, Ghazipur. A strong group of rebels were in control of the factory and had closed the gates. Niazi's men had two recoilless rifles without sights. They fired the shells at the gate of factory, and it fell inside the compound. Meanwhile the firing from inside the factory started. Pakistan army replied heavily and after about an hour, firing from inside stopped. Niazi and his men advanced and entered the factory. Enemy had fled and the families of West Pakistani workers who were locked inside the compound and were being butchered by Bengalis saved.

I was wounded in action at Mirzapur and Niazi was worried about me. Then one day, at the outskirts of Rangpur, me and Niazi were directing mortar fire towards the miscreants' location. We both were sitting on the ammunition boxes containing mortar shells. Suddenly a motrar shell fired by the enemy landed near us. Miraculously, the crates remained unharmed but Niazi and me were hit by sharpnels. I felt as if someone has pierced my arm with a burning knife. I found Niazi worried about me again although he was hit by two sharpnels, and I was hit by one! Such was his greatness.

We parted at Rangpur, and I led the attacking column towards Thakurgaon, where I was severely wounded and had to be repatriated to West Pakistan. I never saw Niazi again.

On December 16, 1971, Niazi was also captured like rest of soldiers. He was shifted to a prison camp inside India. I knew him very well and had the idea that he could not be stopped. He was in connection with his family by letters. He was engaged to a girl in his family. He wrote to his family to end his engagement as he had no idea when he would be back. He made several attempts to escape from the prison, everytime he was caught and punished. One night he again attempted escape, was caught and executed. Articles No. 121 to 123 of Geneva Convention does not allow punishment exceeding 14 days confinement, even to repeat offenders. However minutes after the escape, Indians captured him, and violating the Geneva Convention and ethical conduct, shot him at point blank with a machine gun. He was martyred on enemy soil, and buried there.

He was my brother and brother-in-arms. I mourned him for days, and still do. Somtimes, in the dead of night, between sleep and wakefulness, I hear his voice singing:

" Kukra kanhan thivi, saveray dittiaye bang,

Tay tur gaye sajna da, sanoo wadda laga aye arman.

Kanhan tay turda ay laila, meray mahi tha but nakhraila,

Kanthan ton mari ai chhal, bochhan arrayo dhingri naal

Kukra khandan thivi, saveray dittiaye bang

................................................"

and

"Ucha hawai bangla, wichay maiman tehelthian,

Paa kay qamezan lon thian, wichay maiman tehelthian

........................................"

And I shed a tear and pray for the soul of my brother and the soul of a great warrior. May Allah bless him with elevated status in Jannah, Ameen
