An intense wave of arctic cold has gripped Minnesota, forcing several school districts to modify their schedules as temperatures plunge to dangerous levels. Many schools opted for online learning on Thursday, while others announced early dismissals to ensure student safety.
Weather experts warn that conditions may worsen on Friday, with wind chills expected to range between 35 to 55 degrees below zero, making it one of the coldest periods the state has experienced in years. Officials anticipate more school closures and e-learning days as the extreme cold continues.
The National Weather Service in Duluth stated that several areas could face their coldest temperatures in at least five years, with some locations possibly experiencing the lowest readings in a decade. Northern Minnesota may see air temperatures nearing 30 degrees below zero, while wind chills could dip into the minus 50s.
In the Twin Cities, early Friday morning temperatures could drop close to 20 below zero, accompanied by wind chills near 40 below, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
The extreme weather has also disrupted major events and infrastructure plans. Organizers of the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships at Lake Nokomis canceled all Friday games, emphasizing that the safety of players and staff remains their top priority. The tournament is expected to continue over the weekend once conditions improve.
Additionally, the Minnesota Department of Transportation postponed a major bridge construction project in St. Paul due to the severe cold. The work, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been rescheduled for early February to avoid weather-related risks.
Authorities continue to urge residents to stay informed through official weather updates and to limit outdoor exposure during this historic cold spell.
